WordPress 3.6 is out. If you’re not up to date you should be! Do your WordPress updates.
WordPress 3.6.1 is also a security release for all previous WordPress versions and we strongly encourage you to update your sites immediately. It addresses three issues fixed by the WordPress security team
I recently had a client contact me for help getting logged in to their WordPress site that was built a couple of years ago. The problem was that they were not able to get to their website at all. But they followed up with me a short time later with a ‘nevermind’ email because they discovered that when they turned off their security software they were able to get to the site okay.
That made me suspicious. It is true that sometimes overly aggressive firewall and security settings can interfere with your internet browsing. However, you should not assume the that the software is misbehaving just because when you disable it you can do what you want. It might actually be doing it’s job.
We purged the spammy code from the site and implemented ALL WordPress updates, including those for plugins and themes. Then, last but not least, we changed all the passwords. The site is in good shape now but it would have been better to spend a little time on a regular basis to do the WordPress updates. Maintenance is important. Do you ignore the light on your dash in your car? No? Well, you shouldn’t ignore the UPDATES light on your WordPress dash either.
As in all other parts of life there are no guarantees. But one easy step you can take to protecting your website and keeping it running smoothly is to keep up with your WordPress updates!
